Overseas travel requires special health insurance coverage.
Overseas travel requires special health insurance coverage.

United States citizens who live overseas for long periods of time may face a dilemma when it comes to finding medical insurance protection. Some can remain covered under their current health insurance plans since they travel back and forth between the United States and their international destination. Students are frequently covered through special insurance policies that provide medical coverage in the metropolitan area where they are being educated. However, until the last few years, individuals who spend long periods in remote international destinations have only been able to receive limited travel health insurance coverage.

New Plans Extend Coverage

More than 40 states have approved a new type of health insurance plan designed to meet the global health insurance needs of the long term traveler or citizen working overseas. The new plans provide benefits inside and outside of the United States without any time caps on how much time must be spent in or out of the country. In order to get approved for sale in the United States, all of the plans had to be designed to conform to the United States health insurance laws for clear policy language and clearly detailed benefits.

Key Missionary Insurance Plans

There are now several good health insurance plans available for missionaries and any other citizen who will be out of the United States for long periods of time. The number of available plans is growing as more insurance companies add global health insurance plans to their product offerings. Currently, two of the most popular global health insurance plans are:

  • GlobalNavigator
  • Citizen Secure

GlobalNavigator

HTH Worldwide is a leader in providing health insurance programs and medical assistance to international travelers. Founded in 1997, HTH serves over 500,000 travelers and expatriates annually (as of 2009) with an assortment of insurance plans and programs. All of the HTH plans were designed by United States insurance companies to meet the standards set by the individual state regulators. This attention to United States health insurance design standards has resulted in plans which are widely available in the United States and rich in useful benefits when needed outside of the United States.

The GlobalNavigator program is designed for individuals who need international health and dental insurance for periods of six months or longer. The program offers flexibility in provider selection, coverage and cost:

The policy covers:

  • Doctor and hospital visits to approved physicians and medical facilities in a comprehensive list of countries. Pre-certification is required before planned hospitalization or surgical procedures or within 48 hours of emergency admission to a medical facility.
  • Coverage from ages 14 days to age 74
  • Coverage for prescription medication
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Emergency medical evacuation

Meeting Special Traveler Needs

Missionary health insurance can be purchased by any traveler. You do not have to be a missionary or volunteering in a religious school or project. The benefits of this insurance will also apply to any traveler or expatriate who will be out of the United States for an extended period of time and wants health insurance protection from a United States company.Travelers with shorter travel timeframes may find that their supplemental travel health care needs can be met with basic travel health insurance. For travelers who are part of an organized group, group travel insurance often provides the same level of travel health benefits but with a discounted premium.
