Gail,

I'm sorry that you recently lost your uncle.

Finding life insurance policies can be difficult, but it is not impossible. I've listed a few options that should provide the information you need. In both cases, you will probably need to provide your uncle's social security number, the date of his death, a copy of his death certificate and a copy of the form from the court that shows that you are an authorized executor of his estate.

To determine if he had a veteran's life insurance policy contact the life insurance section of the Department of Veterans Affairs. They can be reached at 1-800-669-8477. Their website is at http://www.insurance.va.gov/miscellaneous/index.htm

To quickly locate a life insurance policy from a private insurance company you can use the Policy Locator Service offered by MIB for $75. Information on this service is on their website at http://www.mib.com/html/lost-life-insurance.html. MIB is an anti-fraud organization which has about 470 insurance companies as members. MIB has insurance policy data for all if its member insurance companies. This central source of policy information is certainly easier than contacting all of the individual companies and checking whether he had a policy with them.

Other options for finding information about a potential life insurance policy are to: 1) Search his personal files for any policy documentation and 2) Review his prior tax returns looking for any deductions he may have claimed or interest he may have received due to life insurance.

KAYE,

Each insurance policy and insurance company has specific limitations and procedures regarding how the proceeds are paid in the event of death of the insured. If you have questions about payment of beneficiaries, I suggest that you or the executor of your brother's estate contact the insurance company directly.
