About VSP

VSP is headquartered in California, but has a network of participating eye doctors who practice throughout the United States. This company also serves members who reside in Canada.

VSP produces a line of frames that are distributed to participating VSP eye doctors, and owns and operates their own optical labs in order to provide quality service to members at a faster rate than if the optical needs were contracted out.

The company additionally participates in charitable causes; VSP formed Sight for Students in 1997, which is an organization which supplies eye care to low income children who cannot otherwise afford eye care.

Vision Service Plan Benefits

VSP offers vision service plans to both businesses and individuals. The benefits included in a member's plan depend on which plan the member has.

  • Business Plans are suitable for small and large businesses. In some instances, the company will cover the entire monthly premium for employees, and in other instances the employees carry the majority of the burden.
  • Individual Plans can be purchased by people who do not have vision coverage, or whose coverage supplied by an employer is insufficient. Vision care is frequently not covered by employers due to the additional cost of a vision plan, but for many people the out-of-pocket expense of eye care is simply unaffordable. By purchasing an individual plan, members are covered for preventative care, eyeglasses, and may also be covered for other eye care-related expenses depending on the plan they purchase.

The actual coverage depends upon the plan selected. Individuals can purchase coverage for around fifteen dollars a month in some areas, and this amount will cover:

  • Eye exams
  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses

This plan does not cover the cost of laser eye surgery, but members can receive large discounts off the cost of surgery if they have the procedure done by an eye doctor within the network. Individuals can also obtain a Vision Service Plan for their families.

Vision Service Plan Dental Coverage

VSP also offers dental insurance coverage in some areas. The amount of dental coverage depends upon which plan the applicant chooses, and not every benefit is available in the first couple of years of the policy. By the third year of coverage, members are eligible for all the benefits, including:

  • Dental exams
  • Orthodontic procedures
  • Restorative procedures

Apply for a Policy

Applicants who have coverage available through their employer should speak to their human resource department to find out what needs to be done to start a policy. Individual applicants without coverage through an employer can apply for policies on the VSP website.

Using the website, applicants can find out if Vision Service Plan coverage is available in their area, and also receive an estimate on the cost of a policy. Information for both the vision service plan and the dental plan are available online, and potential members can also apply online for coverage. Member service representatives are also available over the phone.

The Vision Service Plan is not available everywhere, but VSP does boast an impressive area of coverage. Interested people should log on and see if coverage is available at their location.
