Travel Trailer Insurance

From LoveToKnow Insurance

If you are thinking of hitting the open road this summer with your trailer or RV, it is time to update your travel trailer insurance policy. This insurance is usually separate from your other insurance policies, such as an auto or homeowner's policy. The coverage is also different for each state, so it is important to check with the insurance company that is issuing the travel trailer insurance policy for the limits of coverage, especially if you are traveling out of state.

Hit the road with your insured travel trailer!

Standard Coverage

Standard coverage for travel trailer insurance should include the following:

  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Coverage for your travel trailer accessories
  • Emergency expenses
  • Campsite and vacation liability insurance coverage

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage provides insurance for just about anything that could happen to your travel trailer. This includes anything that could damage your trailer, such as hail, fire, vandalism, theft and other unexpected damage.

Coverage for Accessories

Coverage for your accessories is insurance coverage for things that are attached to your travel trailer. This would include awnings, satellite dishes and television antennas.

Emergency Expenses

Emergency expenses cover most emergencies that you could experience while on the road. The coverage usually doesn't come into effect unless you are at least 50 miles or more from home. It covers the expense of other lodging when your trailer is damaged.

Campsite and Vacation Liability

Campsite and vacation liability coverage provides liability coverage when your travel trailer is parked and you are using it as a residence while traveling or on vacation.

Optional Travel Trailer Insurance Coverage

If you are a frequent traveler or have a very expensive rig, you may want additional coverage not included with a basic travel trailer insurance policy. Option insurance coverage, depending on the state your policy is written in, can include the following:

  • Total loss replacement coverage
  • Replacement cost coverage
  • Full-timer coverage
  • Stationary travel trailer insurance
  • Fifth wheeler coverage
  • Towing and roadside assistance

Total Loss Replacement Coverage

Total loss replacement coverage will pay for the replacement of a travel trailer with a same or similar trailer if it is under five years old. This only applies if another trailer is purchased. It will pay the original cost to replace the trailer for vehicles up to ten years old.

Replacement Cost Coverage

Replacement cost coverage pays for personal belongings that are destroyed as the result of an accident or theft.

Full-Timer Coverage

If you are living in your travel trailer, you may want to purchase this optional coverage. This type of coverage will provide you with liability insurance whether you are on the road or parked.

Stationary Insurance

Stationary travel trailer insurance covers you and others that may become injured in your travel trailer whether it is used for travel or seasonal residence. This insurance provides coverage that may not be included in your homeowners insurance policy.

Fifth Wheel Coverage

If you have a large travel trailer that requires a medium tow truck to pull it, this type of insurance will cover that truck. The insurance only covers the truck though when it is hauling your travel trailer.

Towing and Roadside Assistance

This optional travel trailer insurance coverage will cover you when your vehicle has broken down on the road. When you have this coverage, it will not matter who is driving at the time of the breakdown in order for coverage to be in effect. Whether you need gas, need a vehicle unlocked or you're in need of a tow, this option will have you covered.

A few insurance companies that can provide online quotes for travel trailers include:

Conclusion

It is important to have separate travel trailer insurance for your new recreational vehicle. Most homeowner's and auto insurance policies do not have the comprehensive coverage that you will need. When you purchase a trailer policy, you will insure that your vehicles, as well as your belongings, are covered in the event of an accident.
