State Farm insurance has been providing reliable coverage to Americans since the early 1920s. State Farm Insurance History
After working on his own farm for twenty year, George J. Mecherle retired and became an insurance salesperson for a local company. Although he was successful in his position, Mecherle believed the company wasn’t being fair to the farming industry. Since Mecherle knew firsthand that farmers didn’t drive as often as business people, he believed they should pay less for their car insurance. The management at the insurance company disagreed, and Mecherle set out to start his own company.
In 1922, State Farm insurance was established in Bloomington, Illinois, as a company that provided reasonable car insurance with strong customer service. After just a few years, the company expanded with an office in Berkeley, California. This move is credited with beginning State Farm’s growth into the national company it is today. With close to 80,000 employees in the United States and Canada and over 72 million insurance policies, State Farm is a model of how fair business practices and hard work bring success and growth.
State Farm is now run by chairman and CEO Edward B. Rust Jr. from its headquarters in Bloomington.
State Farm Insurance Services and Products
State Farm insurance helps customers in every aspect of its customers’ lives. Dedicated in their promise to help clients follow their dreams, policies are available for car insurance, homeowner insurance, flood insurance, long term care insurance, and health insurance.
State Farm also operates a fully-functioning financial service with bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and investment options. Most of the companies banking products can be accessed and managed through StateFarm.com.
With so many services under one company, it would be easy for customer service to get lost. But State Farm ensures that each customer is treated fairly by employing 34,000 staff members to work on claims.
Being a State Farm Customer
State Farm makes it easy for potential customers to learn about its products and get an instant policy quote. Statefarm.com has an online application process specifically designed for each type of insurance it offers. The site has added features showing where State Farm-approved service centers are for auto policies and a calculator for determining how much life insurance you should carry.
Some State Farm insurance policies can only be applied for by working with a local agent. Clients looking for more information or a quote for motorcycle insurance, boat insurance, or business insurance can use the online agent directory to find the name and contact information for your local office.
Once you have a policy, many services like bill payments, address changes, and policy updates can be completed online. Customers with car, home, and rental policies can also file claims through the State Farm website.
State Farm in the Community
State Farm is dedicated to improving its community, both through national programs and local initiatives. Some of its community service projects include:
- The Good Neighbor Citizenship: This program provides support to improve communities by strengthening education and increasing safety
- Higher education scholarships: State Farm donates money to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the American Indian College Fund, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
- Community Volunteers: State Farm encourages its employees to take part in community-based volunteer program and sponsors events that staff members can take part in. Each year, State Farm hosts a child safety day which offers car seat inspections to educate drivers about the need for proper child restraints.
State Farm has also formed a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to study the effects of car accidents on children.

Congratulations on lowering your insurance bill! It's always a good idea to shop for potentially lower premiums every year before you renew your policy. Your savings were a good example of the type of money that can be saved.

My leaving State Farm was not because of my agent, Cederic Dickerson, or his staff, it was because I was paying too much for my insurances. When I went to this new company I saved over $1500.00 per year ($800.00 home owners and $700.00 auto). The coverage I have with this other company is the exact same coverage I had with State Farm. If my agent could have lowered my payments I would have stayed with State Farm and I would have been content. What with higher food and fuel prices, we need to trim our budgets and restructure our finances. If State Farm was to adjust their rates I would be ready to come back to State Farm for my insurance needs.
