Metlife Dental Insurance
From LoveToKnow Insurance
MetLife dental insurance is offered by a variety of businesses to employees. Although this coverage is not available to individuals seeking dental insurance, plans are available for small businesses with as few as two people on the policy.
MetLife Dental Insurance Options
Dental insurance from MetLife is available in a few different forms:
- Preferred Provider Organization: Commonly referred to as a PPO Plan, this version of dental insurance allows policyholders more freedom to choose their own dentist.
- Dental Health Maintenance Organization: Also known as a dental HMO Plan, this option usually costs less than other dental insurance plans.
- Indemnity Plans: This dental insurance plan allows policyholders to visit any dentist they please regardless of whether or not the dentist is enrolled as a preferred provider with MetLife.
Other forms of dental insurance are available through MetLife. The policy an employer chooses to offer employees depends largely on the size of the employee roster of the business and the geographic location of the business. Not all options are available in all areas of the country.
Ease of Use
One of the main benefits MetLife advertises for the dental insurance they offer is the ease of use of the coverage. The policies are designed to be easy to understand for both employers and employees. The policies are thoroughly explained and presented in a way that should leave few questions as to the extent of the coverage and at what cost.
One example of this policy simplification is the way the copayments are presented to policyholders. Instead of requiring copayments as a percentage of the total cost, the copayments are presented as a whole dollar amount. This allows policyholders a better understanding beforehand of what their financial obligation for dental procedures will be. In other words, a dental patient will know that a visit to the dentist will cost a certain dollar amount – such as a $10 co-pay – instead of going into the visit knowing that the co-pay will some percentage of the total cost of the visit. This can simplify things greatly for policyholders, making their dental benefits much easier to understand.
This option is available with the Preferred Dentist Program.
Preferred Dentist Program
MetLife offers a Preferred Dentist Program (PDP) as their PPO option. This insurance option allows policyholders to choose their own dentist instead of having one assigned to them. While choosing a dentist who is within the roster of preferred providers has some benefits such as:
- Lower costs
- Less paperwork
- The option to go to any dentist preferred by the patient
Dentists who are not within the PDP will still be reimbursed for dental services rendered by MetLife as long as the patient is enrolled in the PPO.
Dental Health Maintenance Organization
MetLife offers an HMO for dental care in limited areas of the country including:
- California
- Florida
- Texas
The Dental HMO option is not as flexible as the PPO option, but usually costs less and therefore is quite attractive to employers. With this plan, policyholders must visit dentists from within the approved HMO network and in some cases may be assigned a specific dentist. Patients must also receive preauthorization before seeking certain dental services and may have to receive a referral from an authorized source before making an appointment for some services.
