International Health Insurance

From LoveToKnow Insurance

International health insurance is a necessity for people who are either frequent travelers or who reside abroad while still maintaining United States citizenship. Purchasing adequate medical insurance can be tricky, but with a little research, it doesn't have to be a headache.

The Need for International Health Insurance

International health insurance comes in two categories: short term insurance and long term insurance. Short term insurance is sufficient for travelers who are simply vacationing or staying for a brief time at an international location. There are plenty of additional insurance riders which can be added on to this sort of policy, including:

  • Extreme sports involvement insurance
  • Medical evacuation insurance
  • Insurance for trip cancellations due to illness
  • Group insurance

Long term international health insurance is similar to regular health insurance, since it is designed to be used for an extended period of time. It is not necessarily designed for people who will be spending brief periods of time overseas, but instead for those people who are in international locations for longer periods of time, such as professionals working on extended projects abroad. Some employers will cover the cost of long-term international health insurance either fully or partially, but some people need to pick up the entire tab for individual coverage.

A Plethora of Providers

There is certainly no shortage of providers for international health insurance. Whether a person can get adequate coverage at a decent price depends on several different factors. Like any other form of health insurance, people seeking international health insurance will probably need to reply to several health-related questions to find out what type of coverage they are eligible for. Although some short-term international health insurance providers forgo this sort of questioning, when seeking long-term coverage a person needs to be prepared to reply to some invasive questions. Any sort of preexisting condition, such as a major illness or diagnosis, must be revealed to the insurance provider before a policy is issued. If a preexisting condition is not revealed to the provider and then the insured person seeks out medical care resulting in an insurance claim, the provider has every right to deny payment.

It is best for an applicant to be forthright and honest when filling out an application for international health insurance in order to avoid any future headaches.

Expensive Yet Smart

While many travelers don’t bother to get an international health insurance policy prior to traveling, it is still a good idea to have one. The cost of coverage varies depending upon such factors as:

  • The provider
  • The applicant's medical history
  • The countries visited

A person taking out an insurance policy through a top-notch company for travel to Istanbul will probably pay much more than a person who chooses to do business with a lesser-known insurance company for travel to Switzerland. The important thing is for people to do some comparison shopping before deciding upon an insurance company. Comparison shopping should include not only looking for the best prices but also finding a company which is reliable and accessible. Getting great rates on a policy is great, but a person needs to make sure the company will be there should they need assistance.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Why do people take out international health insurance policies? They do so for the same reason people take out health insurance policies at home: because you never really know what may happen. Medical issues can arise while traveling, and sometimes existing medical coverage may not cover emergency care in international locations. It is certainly a prudent idea to look into international health coverage prior to hopping on a plane for some exotic locale. Even if nothing occurs to merit the policy’s usage, travelers feel much more secure knowing they are covered, just in case.
