Health Insurance With Reduction Coverage
From LoveToKnow Insurance
Is it possible to get health insurance with reduction coverage? In some cases, your health insurance will cover the cost of a breast reduction procedure.
Reasons for Considering Breast Reduction Surgery
A woman may be interested in having this type of surgery performed if she is experiencing discomfort because of the size of her breasts. Women who seek this type of treatment report the following types of symptoms:
- Pain in the back or neck
- Gouges in the shoulders caused by bra straps
- Problems with posture
- Skin irritations or rashes under the breasts
- Self-esteem issues
- Difficulty participating in certain activities
- Trouble finding a bra and/or clothing that fits properly
Surgery is an invasive form of treatment and is generally not recommended for women under the age of 20. For some teens, though, who are experiencing extreme self-esteem issues because of very large breasts, this may be a possibility.
Getting Approval from Health Insurance with Reduction Coverage
Once you have decided that you would be happier and healthier if your breasts were smaller, you will need to get your health insurance company to approve the procedure. The first step would be to contact your health insurance provider to ask them what documentation they will need to consider your application.
Hold off on submitting anything until you have all the documentation ready to send in to the insurer. If your application is incomplete or inaccurate, it will not be processed, so be prepared to do the leg work first if you want to have a chance of having your procedure covered.
Breast Reduction Surgery for Medical Reasons
If you are going to get your health insurance company to pay for the surgery, you will need to demonstrate that your reasons for wanting the reduction have to do with health concerns, as opposed to cosmetic reasons. Surgery done for the purpose of improving your appearance will not be covered under your health insurance plan.
The insurance company will want to know what the underlying cause of the problem is, i.e. due to genetics or weight issues. If the issue has to do with excess pounds, then the insurer will want to know what measures you have taken on your own to deal with the weight.
Ask Your Doctor for Help
Enlist the help of your doctor in trying to get the surgery covered. If you are going to try dieting before surgery, book an appointment for a consultation first. Ask the doctor to make note of your weight and to document the size of your breasts before you start trying to lose weight and after you have reached your goal. This will show the insurance company that losing weight didn't affect the size and therefore you need to have the surgery to resolve the problem.
The doctor will also need to document your health issues and demonstrate that they are related to the size (and accompanying weight) of your breasts. You may be experiencing chronic pain in your back, shoulder, and neck (with accompanying nerve damage). Self-esteem issues may be preventing you from enjoying life to the fullest. Participating in sports may be difficult for you as well: be sure to tell the doctor if you are having trouble running, jogging or even lifting weights at the gym.
Choosing the Right Surgeon
Your health insurance with reduction coverage policy may state that the company will provide you with a list of approved surgeons you can consult with. If you are able to choose your own doctor for the procedure, do your homework to ensure that you are dealing with a board-certified plastic surgeon. If the doctor you are consulting specializes in breast procedures, that will be even better.
Taking these steps will increase your chances of having a breast reduction surgical procedure covered by your health insurance plan.
