Health Insurance Coverage
From LoveToKnow Insurance
Given the rising costs of health care, health insurance coverage has almost become a necessity. But, sorting through all of the different health insurance plan options that are available can prove to be a challenge. Read on to learn about the different forms of coverage and what you should look for in a policy.
About Health Insurance Coverage
While there are many people who have health insurance coverage through an employer or organization, there are also many people who have no form of coverage whatsoever. According to the National Coalition on Health Care, approximately one third of employers in the US offer no health coverage to their employees.
The reasons for this vary, but the main reason is because the majority of the population is employed in the service sector. Occupations in this sector include customer service representatives, wait staff, data entry workers, bank tellers, and basically any occupation that doesn't fall into the manufacturing, retail, government, or agricultural sectors. It is not unusual for employers in the service sector to offer little or no benefits to those that they employ.
Because it can be so difficult to find an employer who offers a decent and affordable health insurance plan, you may be forced to seek out your own health insurance coverage.
Types of Health Insurance Coverage
Nowadays, there are many different types of health insurance plans to pick from. The numerous choices can make it difficult to evaluate all of your coverage options and choose the one that is right for you. Even so, it is important for you to take the time to find a plan that meets your needs and the needs of your family.
Most insurance plans can be broken down into two categories:
- Indemnity
- Managed Care
An indemnity plan is a fee for service plan that allows you to choose your physician. Managed care, on the other hand, requires you to visit physicians within a specific network. In most cases, you will pay more out of pocket for an indemnity plan than you will for a managed care plan.
Of course, these are only the two major categories of plans. There are many other additional types of coverage available, such as health savings accounts and catastrophic or accident health insurance.
Policies and Quotes
Before signing up for health insurance coverage, it is a good idea to know exactly what you are paying for. This means carefully combing through your health insurance policy to see what will be covered and what won't be covered.
Your policy should clearly indicate what benefits are offered, as well as the types of services that won't be paid or reimbursed by the health coverage provider. You will want to pay special attention to these items so that there will be no surprises later on. Speaking with your current physicians to see if they accept the form of health insurance coverage that you want to buy may also prove to be a good idea. If your physicians do not accept your insurance, you will need to find new health care providers or go with another form of coverage.
Comparing prices will also prove to be very important. The cost of health insurance coverage can vary significantly depending on whom you buy from and the type of coverage you purchase. This is why it is a good idea to get several different health insurance quotes before making any final decisions.
