Farmers Insurance History

Thomas E. Leavey and John C. Tyler founded the Farmers Company in 1928. From the outset, the partners wanted to establish a company that could provide its policyholders with good-quality products at affordable rates. As the years passed, their business expanded to become the third-largest auto and homeowners insurance writer in the nation.

The Farmers Companies, also known as Farmers Insurance Group, began in California, but now operate in 41 different states. The Farmers Group consists of approximately 20,000 employees. The company's insurance products are offered by a combination of company and independent sales agents. Together, they serve more than 15 million customers.

Two notable programs created by Farmers Insurance include:

  • The American Promise was created in partnership with the National Council for the Social Studies in 1995. This program helps teachers to engage students in good citizenship. The program has helped more than 100,000 teachers across the nation.
  • In an effort to promote greater cross-cultural understanding, Farmers created the Young Americanos program, which reflects the company's commitment to the Latino community.
