Farmers Insurance History

Thomas E. Leavey and John C. Tyler founded the Farmers Company in 1928. As the years passed, their business expanded to become the third-largest auto and homeowners insurance writer in the nation.

The Farmers Companies, also known as Farmers Insurance Group, began in California, but now operate in 41 different states. The Farmers Group consists of approximately 18,000 employees and 17,500 independent agents. Together, they serve more than 15 million customers.

Farmers Group Inc. provides insurance management services for three separate inter-insurance exchanges:

Farmers Group Inc. is also a life insurance holding company of the Farmers New World Life Insurance Company, which offers a wide range of life insurance products.

• Farmers Financial Solutions, LLC- This company’s offerings include a variety of financial products, such as mutual funds, annuities, and life insurance plans.
• Foremost Insurance Company- Farmers acquired this company in March of 2000. Foremost is the industry leader for specialty insurance products for mobile homes, travel trailers, motor homes, and other similar dwellings.

When selecting agent candidates, the company looks specifically for individuals who are ethical, responsible, and dedicated to success. There are currently more than 17,500 Farmers Insurance agents operating throughout the country.

Community Relations

Since the company’s founding in 1928, Farmers Insurance has been committed to helping communities in which their customers, agents, and employees live and work. Considerable resources have been invested in community programs dedicated to improving safety, educational opportunity, and civic participation. Two notable programs created by Farmers Insurance include:

• The American Promise- Created in partnership with the National Council for the Social Studies in 1995, this program helps teachers to engage students in good citizenship. The program has helped more than 100,000 teachers across the nation.
• Young Americanos- In an effort to promote greater cross-cultural understanding, Farmers created the Young Americanos program, which reflects the company’s commitment to the Latino community.

The Magazine

The Farmers Insurance Group publishes a magazine known as Friendly Exchange. The magazine covers home, auto, travel, and personal finance issues. Readers are provided timely news and information that can help them make smart decisions about their futures and finances.
