Dental Plans

From LoveToKnow Insurance

Due to the fact there are so many different dental plans to choose from, it is a good idea to do a little research before making a final decision. Not every employer-provided health insurance policy covers dental work, so people often find themselves shopping around for dental coverage on their own.

Dental Plans Explained

Dental plans are similar to health insurance plans: people pay monthly premiums to an insurance company, and the insurance company in turn covers the cost of certain procedures.

Dental insurance is sometimes included in a person's health insurance package, and other times it is an optional additional insurance rider. Some people are forced to purchase their own dental plans when there is no dental insurance offered through their employer.

Dental plans can be expensive, although the cost of the plan varies according to several factors:

  • The number of family members insured on the plan
  • The cost of the co-pays and deductibles
  • The inclusion or exclusion of additional benefits, such as orthodontic treatments
  • How much flexibility with choosing a provider the insured person wants
  • Preexisting dental conditions

Obtaining Dental Insurance

If dental insurance is simply not offered by a person's employer, or if the employee is self-employed, he or she may want to start the search for affordable dental plans online. By utilizing the Internet, people can easily compare the costs and benefits of hundreds of different dental insurance policies.

The first step is to get several quotes, and then after comparing the different quotes the decision needs to be made as to which company to sign up with and for which policy. When deciding upon a particular policy, potential applicants need to consider the following:

  • Do they want preventative care included in the policy?
  • Do they want to choose their own provider, or pick one on their own?
  • Do they need to insure additional family members?
  • How much money do they want to pay for deductibles, if anything?

It is not a wise decision to simply choose the company which offers the lowest monthly premiums. The low premium may be a result of high co-pays, high deductibles, or excruciatingly complicated policies.

Patients Without Dental Insurance

People who cannot afford the monthly premium of a dental insurance plan do have other options. When visiting the dentist, the patient should work out the payment details beforehand.

If a patient is up-front and honest about the financial situation, often the dentist will offer an affordable payment plan, or perhaps even offer a reduced fee rate to patients within a certain income bracket. Many dentists have a lower fee scale for patients who pay with cash than they do for patients with insurance. Patients in this situation should not hesitate to ask about lower fees for non-insured patients.

Government sponsored dental plans also exist for people who cannot afford to seek dental care on their own.

Dental Care is Important

Although dental coverage can be expensive, this is simply not an aspect of health which people can afford to ignore. Poor oral health can lead to other health problems, and therefore dental health should be considered as vital as any other form of required health maintenance. As with all aspects of general health, preventative maintenance is preferred to awaiting an emergency before seeking the help of a dentist.

Before receiving dental care, patients should make sure the procedure is covered by the dental policy they have. Different dental plans cover different things. For example, not all policies cover cosmetic dental procedures, and not every policy will cover the cost of anesthetic for oral surgery.
