American Express Travel Insurance: Global Travel Shield
American Express card members have the option of using their card to help ensure that their vacation or business trip goes smoothly. Unexpected events can happen anywhere, at anytime. That is why having travel insurance is important for anyone planning a trip. Global Travel Shield is the major American Express travel insurance plan. The different aspects of the plan can be customized to meet your specialized needs.
Trip Cancellation/Interruption
This insurance reimburses you if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a specific (covered) reason. It also covers additional travel expenses you may incur due to the interrupted or cancelled plans.
Global Medical Plan
This plan covers emergency medical and dental issues that may occur while traveling. It covers medical transportation for you to a care center, and should you be hospitalized for more than five days, transportation for a family member or friend to come to your bedside.
Airflight Insurance
This insurance supplies coverage for airline flights. It covers your flight, as well as your trip to and from the airport. Airflight insurance also covers accidental death and serious injuries.
Global Baggage Protection Plan
This plan covers baggage that is lost, stolen, delayed or damaged while traveling, whether on an airplane or after you have checked into a hotel.
Global Trip Delay
This covers missed airplane connections, or other delays occurred while traveling. It helps cover lodging (hotel) and any other expenses.

Car Rental Insurance
Renting a car is a big part of traveling for many people who choose to fly to a destination. Renting a car, even for a day or two, can open up travelers to the possibility of an accident. Details of the Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance Plan include:
- Covers theft or damage to your rental vehicle
- As a primary renter, use the American Express card and decline the collision insurance offered by the commercial car rental service
- American Express car rental insurance is in addition to any other rental insurance you may have
- Applies for 30 days
- Coverage is through AMEX Assurance Company out of Wisconsin
Travel Accident Insurance
Travel accident insurance covers you, your spouse, other card members, and dependents under the age of 23 who are traveling with you. As long as you charge the entire fare of a plane, bus, ship, or train ticket to your American Express credit card, you can be covered for up to 100,000 dollars in the event of accidental dismemberment or death. Claims must be filed within 20 days of the occurrence. This coverage is provided through AMEX Assurance Company.
Traveling, whether for business or pleasure, can bring worries along with it. Yes. The American Express Platinum Cards have a program called Global Assist. Through Global Assist, American Express will arrange for English-speaking doctors and hospitals to assist the cardholder or the cardholder's family with their medical needs.
