Aetna Dental Insurance
From LoveToKnow Insurance
Although this company may be best known for its offerings for health insurance, Aetna dental insurance is a popular choice among both individuals and families.
About Aetna
Aetna started out as a life insurance company back in 1850, but it wasn't until 1899 that this company started offering health insurance products. In present day, Aetna is considered a leader within the insurance industry. It is headquartered in Connecticut but offers insurance products in all 50 states.
Insurance products offered by Aetna include dental, health and disability policies in addition to other insurance products. There are over 14 million dental insurance members under this company. Aetna insures individuals and families through company benefits and through individual policies purchased outside of an employee package.
About Aetna Dental Insurance
Dental coverage through Aetna is offered as an employee benefit in some companies. People can also purchase the dental coverage separately and pay out of pocket.
Group Coverage
Group dental coverage is provided by Aetna to employer groups in three different versions: DMO, PPO and Dental Indemnity.
- DMO: The Dental Maintenance Organization functions similarly to a health insurance HMO. It is often the lowest cost option for dental insurance and involves members getting assigned to a primary dentist. Referrals are necessary for any extra procedures but there are no deductibles to pay.
- PPO: The Preferred Provider Organization allows members to choose their own dentist, although they will receive a discount if they choose a provider within the Aetna network. There is a deductible associated with this plan, but no referrals are necessary.
- Dental Indemnity: This dental plan option allows members to choose any licensed dentist with discounts available for choosing a network dentist.
The policies which are offered by your employer may vary. Speak to a representative in the Human Resources (HR) department of your company for more information, or contact Aetna directly for more information regarding the options available to you through employer provided Aetna dental insurance.
Individual Coverage
Dental insurance policies can be purchased through Aetna by individuals and families who do not have the option to purchase adequate insurance through an employer.
There are two plans available, both of which are dental PPOs. The Plus plan offers broader coverage, but costs more per month in premiums. Prices also vary according to what state you reside in. Both plans have deductibles and may include waiting periods before the maximum coverage for some procedures is available to policyholders.
Here is a sampling of the coverage offered through individual dental plans through Aetna:
- 100 percent coverage:
- Diagnostic examinations
- Preventative dental care
- Partial coverage:
- Dental cleanings
- Fillings
- Oral Surgery
- Root Canals
The amount of money paid by Aetna to your provider for the above procedures depends on which plan you have. There are other dental procedures, such as crowns and dentures, that may be partially covered but this also depends on the policy you purchase. There are some dental treatments that are not covered at all, such as certain dental cosmetic procedures and treatment for TMJ.
Obtain Dental Coverage
If this dental coverage is provided by your employer, speak to a HR representative to find out what you need to do to enroll yourself and eligible family members into a dental insurance policy.
If you want to purchase a policy on your own, visit the Aetna website. Depending on what state you live in, you can review the available policies and submit an application. You will have to print up an application from the website and mail it directly to Aetna in order to apply for dental coverage.
