AARP Dental Insurance

From LoveToKnow Insurance

Having good dental care is an important part of staying healthy, and the AARP dental insurance plan is a way for seniors to get affordable coverage for their needs.

About AARP Dental Insurance

The AARP dental insurance plan offers two levels of coverage. Subscribers to the plan are covered for a certain percentage of the dentist's fee up to the policy maximum for procedures that are included under the policy.

  • Plan A reimburses 100 percent of eligible costs up to the policy maximum
  • Plan B pays 80 percent of fees up to the policy maximum

Any amount owed that is above the policy maximum is paid by the subscriber. An annual maximum is set for each calendar year and subscribers are also responsible for paying an annual deductible. The deductible is the amount that the insured person needs to pay out before the insurance company will pay any benefits. You can find more information about what services are covered by visiting the AARP web site.

PPO Plan

The AARP plan for dental insurance is a PPO - or Preferred Provider Organization- plan through Delta Dental. This means that you can visit any licensed dentist that you would like to see for your care, but the plan will pay out at a higher rate if you choose to see one of Delta Dental's network of providers.

More than 67,000 dentists have signed on to be part of Delta Dental's network. In return for access to the pool of subscribers to the AARP dental insurance plan, these health care providers have agreed to provide services at a reduced rate.

How the Plan Works

The Plan pays the dentist on completion of services that are covered under the policy. After you have paid the amount of your deductible each year, the Plan pays for the services, subject to the maximums mentioned above.

You can choose to have multiple family members covered under the Plan, and everyone is not required to visit the same dentist. If you need to see a dental specialist, you can ask your primary dentist for a referral or consult one on your own. In this situation, it is to your financial advantage to see a specialist who is a member of the Delta Dental network of providers. Seeing a specialist outside of the network means that you will need to pay for your procedures yourself and submit a claim to Delta Dental asking to be reimbursed.

Enrolling in the Plan

To enroll in the plan, you must be an active member of the AARP. As the primary enrollee, you can choose to add other family members to the plan, including:

  • Your spouse or domestic partner
  • Dependent children under the age of 26
  • Dependent children who are disabled

How to Find a Participating Dentist

There are two ways to find a dentist who is a member of the Delta Dental network of service providers:

  • Delta Dental offers an online directory. Simply type in your city and state to get a list of participating dentists near you. You can also decide how far you are willing to travel (up to 50 miles) and elect to get results for specific dental specialties (general dentist, oral surgeon, orthodontist, etc.).
  • Contact the Customer Service Center at 1-866-583-2085. A representative will be able to provide you with the name, address, and specialty of local dentists who are members of the provider network.

The AARP Dental Insurance plan is a benefit offered to members of AARP. You can enroll at any time throughout the year to get the dental coverage you need.
